Sometimes I hear people ask the question, “What would Jesus be doing if he were alive today?” The answers vary from ridiculous (He would be an awesome guitarist for a heavy metal band) to disillusioned (He would be making the rounds to all the megachurches with his whip of cords) and everything between.
I certainly can’t say with any certainty everything that he would be doing, but I can say this: He would be talking about the kingdom of God. Everything he did in his ministry was about the kingdom in one way or another, from his baptism to his death. His compassion, his actions, and especially his message were all about the kingdom.
This emphasis on the kingdom is the one thing the church cannot afford to lose sight of. If our words and our actions are not intended to help the kingdom grow, then we are doing little more than playing church. We are to go and make disciples, baptizing and teaching. This is our great commission. Let us make sure it is not our great omission.
